Weekly Writing Challenge – Lunch Posts

The Weekly Writing Challenge for the week of January 20, 2014 is about what we see during our lunch time moments.

Over a ten year period in the 1950s and 1960s Frank O’Hara took notes about the lunch experiences he witnessed in New York City. For this week’s writing challenge, take a cue from O’Hara and write a short(er) post during your lunch hour. During this limited period of time, take a look at your surroundings and document what you see.

• Are your coworkers dancing around the office, rushing to and fro with purpose?
• Are you waiting in line for your food, when the family in front of you offers some endearing gesture to their little ones?
• Or are you at home with your own children, and can’t help but notice the way the afternoon light glimmers on your son or daughter’s face while eating their lunch?

For a few moments the time is mine to relax and enjoy some food. But what food today. The possibilities as always can be endless, it is simply a matter of how much creativity leaks in. There is always the easy way, traveling to the nearest drive through window to collect the fast food option. With the time allotted this is possible, but surely not the best choice.

Healthy options abound, it is merely the choice of a good or bad habit. The freedoms accompanying work from home allow the choices to be many. Leftovers or something totally new also add more wrinkles to the fabric of choice. Ultimately leftovers from one of our favorite Italian restaurants fit the bill and begin to warm in the toaster oven.

For this short period the Kindle Fire is another preferred option. Catching up on a television show from Netflix is a great way to pass the minutes. Breaking the day with this brief distraction can mean so much and make the afternoon that much more enjoyable.
