Blitzen trotted on to the field as the others in the stands cheered with delight. He knew he only needed a few more games like this one to cement his legacy as the best non-human to play football since that donkey Disney made the movie about when he was just a kid. He tried to remember the name of the movie but all he could recall as he watched his line get into position was the silly little man that held the ball and yelled out something like “Oyich” before the donkey did what donkeys do and kicked backwards. Blitzen had to admit seeing the donkey manage to only kick with one leg was unusual.
He pawed at the ground one, two, three times as discussed in the huddle, which triggered the long snapper’s reaction and delivery of the brown shiny leather ball. His holder scooped the delivery from the air and spun the laces away in anticipation of his kick. Blitzen eyed the ball and looked up through the goal post as it left his foot and sailed exactly where he wanted.
His teammates mobbed him on the field and carried him off to cheers of the fans. Blitzen wanted to enjoy the moment, but saw Santa Claus waiting inside the home team tunnel and knew something was up. He tossed the game winning football to his holder and trotted over to meet his boss.
“Blitzen, I have some bad news!”
