Flash in the Pan – Radio

Flash in the Pan is another opportunity for you to enjoy Flash Fiction. I was happy to find it, but I am sure there are others who do not know. While flash can mean a lot of things, for this specific challenge it is limited to 150 words or less.  There is a range of limits for each of the words selected for the Flash in the Pan challenge and Up is one of those with the highest word limit.

By selecting the words in the quarter’s list you can know your word limit. The exciting thing is that these stories are collected for publication each quarter. But, only 250 flashes entered will make the publication, so do not hesitate. The theme for this quarter’s edition is Boys and Their Toys. The deadline for story entry in March 31, 2014.

Radio (149)

The silence of the large living room was broken each evening by sounds captured within a studio over a thousand miles away. Granny Toler called the large wooden box the devil’s voice. Others called it magic that the voices were able to be heard in a living room when the creators were so far away.

But for my mom and dad it was something that represented a source of news. I remember the day my older brothers Don and John left to fight in the war. We were proud on the one hand, but apprehensive on the other. Too many did not return from the Great War and this one looked like it would be much worse.

The radio told of horrible atrocities committed by Adolph Hitler and his army. But word began to come of successes by our soldiers. We felt like there might be hope after all.
