Flash in the Pan – Football

Flash in the Pan is another opportunity for you to enjoy Flash Fiction. I was happy to find it, but I am sure there are others who do not know. While flash can mean a lot of things, for this specific challenge it is limited to 150 words or less.  There is a range of limits for each of the words selected for the Flash in the Pan challenge and Up is one of those with the highest word limit.

By selecting the words in the quarter’s list you can know your word limit. The exciting thing is that these stories are collected for publication each quarter. But, only 250 flashes entered will make the publication, so do not hesitate. The theme for this quarter’s edition is Boys and Their Toys. The deadline for story entry in March 31, 2014.

Football (150)

It had been one hundred twenty nine days since Al Greenberg was announced as the new head football coach at his alma mater. Pundits and prognosticators had their chance to muse on his possibilities as head coach of a team that was perennially ranked at the top of the ranks of college gridiron powers.

But today reality began for him and the eighty nine young men who would don the Red and blue jerseys with the Tiger head on them. It was his opportunity to validate the faith of the university in trusting their prized football job with him.

He sucked in the sweet smell of fresh cut grass as he walked the field as his usual routine the morning of the game. The white lines made perfect geometric divisions and fueled his excitement as he imagined his boys running toward their first victory and reward for all their work.
