Weekly Writing Challenge – Moved By Music

Weekly Writing Challenge

The Weekly Writing Challenge for the week of November 4, 2013 was titled Moved By Music. I am a child of the 1980s and Eighties Music is something I still enjoy listening to today. When any of the songs from that decade play they transport me back in time to the period when I was 15 to 25 and just learning to love the Rock and Pop music playing on the radio during that period.

My indoctrination to this genre was aided by the weekly countdown of hits helmed by Rick Dees. Another contributor to my love was the beginning of MTV. Listening to music on the radio was great, but seeing the music video as the artists or band acted out part of the story shared by the music was a whole different adventure. I was hard pressed to find a video that did not catch my attention.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was more like a mini-movie than your average video. REO Speedwagon and “That Ain’t Love To Me” still is one of my favorite songs of all time, along with Murray Head’s “One Night in Bangkok” and Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus”. I even delved into the dark side with “Nobody’s Fool” by the boy band Cinderella. MTV is much different these days, what with the new love for reality television.

I can remember hours spent in my college dorm listening to this music and special memories that tie to specific songs. I guess you could say I have a music association kind of memory. I can place events based on the music of the time. It is a great way to reminisce about my youth.

How long will this music hold such a special place in my memory? I hope as long as I breathe. If you take a look at my iTunes account it is at least 50% full of Eighties songs I have collected since creating the account. So I can listen to my favorites at any time. Keeping with the evolving technology I also have an app on my Windows Phone that lets me play specific collections of Eighties music with Nokia Music Service.

Now I have begun to use Pandora and I know it has specific ways to direct your music choices, so I should be in a position to continue to love and relive this time forever.
