Daily Prompt – Name that . . .you!

Daily Prompt – Name that . . . you! Do you know the meaning of your name, and why your parents chose it? Do you think it suits you? What about your children’s names?

According to what I see when I look up my first name, Joseph, it means “he will add”. Of course it is a name that appears at least a couple of times in the old testament. The man that accompanied the Virgin Mary to Bethlehem and the eleventh son of Jacob who goes on to become an important leader in Egypt.

My connection is more direct, as I was named after my grandfather, who was named William Joseph. He went by the name Joe, like I do. I am not sure exactly how it came about, but he was called Joe Hoss. My middle name is Russell, the maiden name of my mother. When I was little I was called Joe Russ, I suspect as a way to differentiate my name from my Grandfather’s.

I think my name suits me, mainly because it is something I have lived with my whole life. Any other moniker would seem strange at this point in my life. AS far as going back to the meaning of the name “he will add”, I guess I could reconcile that by thinking about the things I do. I have two great kids I am proud of and feel my wife and I are doing all we can to prepare them for their life to come.

I like to think I am adding positively to the collection of blogs online. I am also moving toward the publication of my first fiction novel. I hope it is the beginning of my career as an author. I want to be able to make a positive impact into the world of books.

Selecting names for your children can be an overwhelming proposition. I mean whatever you choose they will wear their entire lives. Thinking about that, perhaps too much, made the process of naming our son so difficult we did not settle on his name until shortly before he was born. His first name, Isaac, has a meaning of “he laughs”. WHen he was little he did laugh a lot.

Our daughter is named Meredith, which among other meanings is “guardian of the sea”. I know what you are thinking. I am one of the legions of Grey’s Anatomay fans and that is the origin of her name. No, sorry, I can pleady partially guilty to the first fact, but innocence to the second.

Meredith was the name of someone I worked with a decade and half ago and was just an unusual name I liked. There is just too many Ashley’s (six in my daughter’s class), Meghan’s, Hannah’s and the like. Meredith is a name she shared with no one until a family from Kansas moved here three years ago.
