Daily Prompt for August 30: Are writing prompts a useful exercise, or do you find them to be too limiting and/or hokey?
I love the writing prompt option. Sometimes it is a great way to explore your writing limits as it can be something you normally would never chooses as a topic. We all have our comfort zones of subjects we like to write about. By embracing the variety of the writing prompts we open ourselves to an opportunity for growth in our writing range.
I participate in several ongoing writing prompts. Trifecta is one of these opportunities I enjoy twice each week. On Monday they offer a one word prompt and ask for a response based on the third definition as posted on their website. They allow you between 33 and 333 words to weave your writing magic. There is a ever growing community of writers that help encourage you as you go. They also have a weekend version on Friday where normally 33 words is the limit. This can really help you sharpen your writing and get a lot done with a few words.
Friday Fictioneers is a photo prompt , but only 100 words, 900 less than what a picture is famously worth, is all you are allowed to use to describe what the photo says to you. Again this makes your writing more crisp as you cannot waste any adjectives, or anything else for that matter. I look forward to this prompt every week and the variety of words people come up with.
Of course we cannot forget the Daily Prompt itself. If you lean toward limiting or hokey for your response I have a question and an answer for your consideration. First the question. Could you come up with 365 prompts that suited everyone’s taste? If so, start another prompt series on your blog. There are plenty of people willing to give you a try.
The answer is a little snooty, but here it comes. If you don’t like the prompts, don’t answer them. No one is forcing you to do something you don’t like. Leave it to those who have something to say. That is the beautiful thing about blogging, you choose your topics as well as the frequency in which you add new material. Every prompt doesn’t catch my interest or present an opportunity to represent my writing with a decent effort. The wisdom is to know that and choose to let it pass.
