Trifecta: Week Eighty – One Man’s Freak Is Another Man’s Treasure

This is my first try at the longer version of Trifecta, but I hope you enjoy! If you are new the goal is to use the third definition below to craft a story.

For Horace it was all about the hunt. It was his eighth trip into Stamping Squares this month. Julio Martinez had a great business with lots of stamp collectors coming in every day. Horace couldn’t risk missing the chance to find his prize. Since he was eleven he had searched for it and  his hunger was just as strong as when his grandfather first showed him the picture in his stamp source book.

This “freak” as it was called was a photo of a  small theater in Virginia. The Barter Theater was a place where several well-known Hollywood stars got their start, including Gregory Peck, Ned Beatty, Ernest Borgnine and Patricia Neal. When the stamp was first printed there was an anomaly in the printing which caused a ripple on the bottom right corner.

The mistake was discovered after five full sheets of stamps were completed. Now, some twenty-eight years later only three stamps remained and Horace wanted one. He noticed a young woman, maybe two years younger shuffling through a new batch of stamps. he could tell they were new because of the way they were arranged.

Horace swallowed hard as he moved in beside her and slowly flipped back through the stack of frames. His breathing became labored as he eliminated each one, beginning to think he was imagining something. Horace stopped with the next frame. Again more chills as he remembered the details of the photo in the book his grandfather left to him and he compared then with the prize in front of him. He wondered if Julio knew what he had. No, he couldn’t or it would not still be here. He fought to contain his expression as he carried the frame to the cash register where Julio flashed his best salesman smile.

“Found something?”

As soon as Horace was out the door his face exploded into a gigantic smile. He was suddenly a millionaire.

The Barter Theater is located in Abingdon, VA and was the starting point for more stars than those I referred to in my fiction story.
