Do you have a friend who enjoys a photo challenge? Then you should send them a link to the Friday Fictioneers weekly photo prompt. Last week we crossed the century mark for the number of entries to the weekly tussle. Writers from all corners of the world add their interpretation of the prompt. You can too by following the link to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields each week.

A special thanks to Beth Carter for the photo we use as the jumping off point.

Genre (General Fiction)

In his mind, the collection of junk was as good as any other car on the road.

But Leo’s mind was an eclectic mix of thoughts much like his “homemade car”.

He even played the Johnny Cash song while he worked on making it “perfect”.

“One piece at a Time” was the perfect song for the labor of love Leo employed building his “car”.

For all the doubters he created a cardboard sign defending his car’s honor.

“Sure It Runs!” was the biggest declaration. He could certainly mimic the sound of the car his dad owned when he was young.

  1. Michael Fishman says:

On the first reading the last sentence seemed out of place to me and didn’t seem to fit. Then it struck me that maybe he was building the car as sort of a tribute to his dad and reliving some special times from his youth when the two of them were together. Good song choice!

  2. Sunshine says:

a soul that is content in all his world offers him…a homemade car, his fave song and best of all, good memories of his father. this is a beautiful, touching my heart story.

  3. What a quirky guy you’ve created. I think I’d like to meet him. Great story.

  4. billgncs says:

Hi Joe – -hope the government doesn’t make him crash test it!

  5. elmowrites says:

I like the unreliable narration here, Joe. I got the feeling maybe Leo was mentally challenged, and I see from the comments that might be right. Nice little snippet!

    • Joe Owens says:

yes, I imagined Leo as mentally challenged, but able to realize what his blessings are. This car is as good as a Ferrari to him. Thanks for reading and commenting about the style.

  6. Haha..that reminds me of every little boy I have ever known and the sounds of engines that vibrate through their lips. Thanks for the memories.

  7. vb holmes says:

Any fan of Johnny Cash has to be all right as far as I’m concerned–I read Leo as a performance artist and Beth Carter as the photographer who documented his gallery exhibition.

  8. Bee says:

I really like the way Leo thinks about himself and his car, despite what others may see. I really enjoyed this piece.

    • Joe Owens says:

We all have that power. Unfortunately many with “more” intelligence actually live a more troubled life by allowing other’s opinions to dictate their self concept. Leo is doing it the right way I believe.

  9. Parul says:

Interesting how your mc and his traits match the zodiac sign. Or am I reading too much in it?
Either ways, this made a good read!

So you took time to read what I wrote and I appreciate it, but comments are even better!
